If there’s any actor who just keeps L-I-V-I-N, it’s Matthew McConaughey. His career has followed an impressive trajectory, ranging from the early 2000s romcom typecast, to the McConaissance in which he proved his serious acting chops with performances like his Oscar award-winning Ron Woodroof in Dallas Buyers Club. But McConaughey is ultimately at his best when he plays that free-spirited, laid back character with a “f*ck it” spirit—and it’s his time to shine again.
In Harmony Korine’s new film, The Beach Bum, McConaughey plays Moondog, a stoner poet and the life of the party who lives in the Florida Keys. Sporting stringy, long blond locks and a Hawaiian shirt (and not much else), he reprises his role of The Chill Dude once more. Offbeat roles like Moondog see him at his prime, as McConaughey seemingly channels an amplified version of himself, playing the laid back oddball to such an extreme that his characters are hilariously infectious.
In the spirit of The Beach Bum, we’re counting down the top characters that paved the way for McConaughey's wildest role yet.
1. Wooderson, Dazed and Confused
Alright, alright, alright, who can forget McConaughey's breakout role? In this cult classic, he plays a chilled-out, suave (or so he thinks) slacker who never grows up and still hangs with the town’s teens, despite being years older. From the dirty ‘stache to the unforgettable quotes, Wooderson introduced McConaughey as a character actor who takes a role and makes it his own.
2. Dallas, Magic Mike
Think Wooderson, but sexy. McConaughey stole the spotlight in Magic Mike by playing Dallas, the boss of Xquisite, Tampa's most popular male strip club. Here, you can catch him teaching The Kid (Alex Pettyfer) the provocative tricks of the trade and dropping his legendary “alright, alright, alright” catchphrase almost as many times as in Dazed and Confused. With a twangy accent in full effect, leather pants tighter than leggings and his don't-give-a-damn attitude, we love that Dallas’ modus operandi is to just let loose and put on a good show.
3. Steve Addington, Surfer, Dude
Can you think of anyone better suited than McConaughey to play the part of a stoned surfer-turned-VR-video-game star undergoing an existential crisis? Along with his tie-dye-shirt-wearing manager (Woody Harrelson) and his guardian angel (Willie Nelson), Steve is able to make it through his “bogus” circumstances one joint and pool party at a time. It's the birth of his sun-kissed skin, beachy blonde hair, gnarly catchphrases and IDGAF beach bum vibe.
Lose yourself in the wild, fun-loving world of The Beach Bum.
We can’t all be as carefree as Moondog, but watching The Beach Bum will inspire you to live life to the fullest. From crazy parties to chill, beachy moments, it's a movie that will reinvigorate your spirit. Experience it with your buddies on the big screen for all the sun-drenched summer vibes.
